Greetings! I am so honored to serve as president of the Eugene Public Library Foundation. A huge thank you to Julie Whitmore, president for the past two years, for her steadfast leadership and farsighted vision. And thanks to the Foundation Board as a whole, for its dedication to the Eugene Public Library.
Because of you, our donors, and your generous and continued support, the library offers Eugeneans a place to find so much more than that book you’ve been wanting to read: computer support; DVDs; sound editing; virtual reality; book groups; adult literacy programs; story times for tots; the Maker Hub and the Mobile Maker Van; and space to study, collaborate, and just hang out for teens. The Foundation supports many of these programs and numerous other library offerings—including Lucky Day Books!
This issue of our newsletter celebrates the 5th birthday of the Imagination Library in Eugene. The program started when a Foundation Board member saw a brief story about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library on TV’s 60 Minutes. What a great idea! He thought. Why can’t we do that in Eugene? He brought the idea to the Foundation Board, who, in partnership with the library, agreed to sponsor the program here in Eugene. Here we are five years later, and the program is serving about 3,700 preschoolers every month! Please join us in celebrating early literacy at the Imagination Library Luncheon on September 12 at the Valley River Inn. To register for the event, or for more information, call 541-338-7018 or register online here.
Thank you again for helping to make the Eugene Public Library one of the finest libraries on the West Coast, and a great resource for our fair city.
Wishing you a beautiful end to summer,
